The Angus Brand

The Triquetra Symbol

The Angus Brand features the Pictish Knot or triquetra (Latin for three cornered) which represents Angus' heritage as a centre of the Pictish Kingdom. Angus, Scotland

The triquetra symbol can be seen on carved stones in northern Europe dating from the 8th Century AD. It was most probably used as a religious symbol, possibly first in pagan religion and later in Christianity as a symbol to represent the Holy Trinity.

The triquetra in the Angus brand represents the notion of unity and of partnership - principles on which Angus Ahead is based.

The Strapline - "Scotland's Birthplace"

The Angus brand also features a strapline or slogan - "Scotland's birthplace".

The strapline is inspired by the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 at Arbroath Abbey, when the Scots declared their nationhood and right to self-government, here in Angus. This document is one of the most important is Scottish History and influenced the US Declaration of Independence.

The strapline alludes to several further historical aspects of Angus:

  • Circhenn (present day Angus and parts of Kincardine) was the premier province and heartland of the ancient Pictish Kingdom.
  • Angus was the location for the battle of Dunnichen in 685 AD when the Picts defeated the Northumbrians, effectively halting Northumbrian expansion and paving the way for the formation of the Scottish nation.
  • According to historian Hector Boethe, King Malcolm III (Canmore) held the first Scottish parliament in Forfar.
