Angus Achievers Awards 1999

Broadcaster Magnus Magnusson presented the awards in six categories on behalf of the Angus Ahead Campaign.

A judging panel headed up by Provost Frances Duncan of Angus Council chaired the selection of the shortlist in the community category.The other judges included Liz McColgan (sports category); Scottish Tourism Board chief executive Tom Buncle (Tourism category); SFA chief executive David Taylor (Business category) and prominent artist James Morrison (arts and cultural category).

Speaking at the ceremony, Magnus Magnusson said: "Angus us reasonably well know within Scotland, but could perhaps be described as one of Scotland's best kept secrets in international terms.Judging by what we have seen tonight, however, I am sure that won't be the case for very much longer"

 

Arts and Culture Award

WINNER:

  • Gordon Roger of the Practical Pipers Society in Carnoustie
    for organising an annual piping competition for young people.

RUNNER-UP:

  • Arbroath Abbey Pageant.

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Artist William Cadenhead of Forfar 

  • Photographer Jack MacDonald of Glen Prosen

 

Business Award

WINNER:

  • Carnoustie Golf Course Hotel and Resort Ltd for
    "showing the world that Angus means business when it comes to international golf tourism"

RUNNER-UP:

  • MSTI Ltd of Montrose

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Glen Prosen based Glen Soaps 

  • Bellwood Trees of Brighton of Ruthvie 

Community Award

WINNER:

  • Arbroath's CafĂ© Project
    for innovating and motivating young people in health, employment and educational issues.

RUNNER-UP:

  • Arbroath Retailers and Business Association

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Carnoustie Twinning Association 

  • Gordon Rogers

 

Sport Award

WINNER:

  • Cameron Black, a 21 your old swimmer from Carnoustie, who after overcoming asthma to win a clutch of medals representing Britain in Europe and North America.

RUNNER-UP:

  • Simon Needham, Top Scottish and UK archer

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Lona Jackson of Kirriemuir for javelin throwing 

  • Darren Burnett, a young champion bowler of Arbroath. 

Tourism Award

WINNER:

  • Gordon's Restaurant in Inverkeillor
    which has picked up various awards for its food and services.

RUNNER-UP:

  • Pictavia Visitor Centre

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Glamis Primary School 

  • Chaplebank House Hotel, Forfar

 

Young Achiever Award

WINNER:

  • Andrew Grier of Arbroath
    who combines an interest in music, church and community activities with running the Arbroath High School website.

RUNNER-UP:

  • Tony Cargill of Arbroath who was the world champion highland dancer.

HIGHLY COMMENDED:

  • Paul Hardie 

  • Jemma Scott both of Arbroath.
