Angus Ambassador Awards 2010The 18 finalists of the Angus Ambassador Awards 2010 have now been selected with winners to be announced at the gala award ceremony on 26 November.

 

With a tide of quality entries, competition for the coveted 2010 Angus Ambassador Awards has never been so fierce. Nominations were up by 20% on last year and the judges comprising Angus Ahead Champions and award sponsors took 12 hours to decide on who should get through to the final.

 

The finalists have been announced as follows:  

 

Ambassador of the Year

Business Ambassador – Entrepreneurial Angus Award

Sponsored by: Enterprise North East Trust

  • Good Natured of Arbroath is a produce range pioneered by Angus soft fruits and sold through major supermarkets nationwide.
  • Intervention Rentals Ltd, based in Lunan Bay, through product innovation in the Oilfield service sector, has quadrupled its turnover and staff numbers in four years.
  • MacKays of Arbroath is one of the few remaining jam manufacturers in Europe employing 120 people making one million jars of jam per month and exporting to 25 countries. 

Community Ambassador – Pride of Angus Award

  • Ian Pert from Edzell – Runs the Hedzup Racing youth development programme that offers motorcycle training and racing with support from Tayside Police.
  • Martin Fair, Minister of St Andrews Church in Arbroath that is now described as the 'Hub of the Community' through services, clubs and activities for all ages, an outreach centre and fund raising campaign for Malawi resulting in a day care centre in Namisu.
  • Showcase the Street - Biggest provider of affordable dance across eight Angus towns and villages, and Dundee with an attendance of 1300 3-18 year olds.

Cultural Ambassador – Creative Angus Award

  • Angus Archives offers a first class 800 year old archival research facility to the local, national and international community, attracting many visitors from the UK and beyond.
  • Arbroath born mezzo soprano Karen Cargill is now one of opera's brightest international stars. She will make her US opera debut this year at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and at Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
  • Jazz at Hospitalfield in Arbroath is the longest running jazz venue of 20 years in the country attracting international recognition and world renowned performers.  

International Ambassador- GoAhead Angus Award

  • Angus College, Arbroath – demonstrates innovation and international focus in product development of its education offering through exchanges, work with 15 countries and 24 European transnational partners and international contracts.
  • Royal Montrose Golf Club– the 2010 bicentenary celebrations involved a full year of golf events that attracted visitors from all over the world and included a visit from HRH Duke of York, and a junior development programme.
  • Tayside Special Olympics- charity dedicated to help people with a learning disability achieve their sporting potential. At the National Summer Games in 2009, the athletes returned with 43 Gold, 67 Silver and 34 bronze medals and 13 athletes from the region were selected to represent GB at the European Games in Warsaw this year. 

Tourism Ambassador – Welcome Angus Award

  • Arbroath Seafest Company – set up in 1997 this key festival now attracts 25,000 visitors over its two day summer festivities
  • Brucefield Boutique Bed & Breakfast, Arbroath - as a first class bed and breakfast provider, the owners are the proud achievers of VisitScotland's highest quality and standards grading; '5 star B & B' despite a tough economic climate.
  • Piperdam Golf and Leisure Resort, Fowlis – offers a world class resort that includes lodge accommodation, conferencing, weddings/functions and site activities. In 2009 it secured a Diamond Award for quality and customer service placing second in the whole of Scotland. 

Youth Ambassador – Aspiring Youth Award

  • Carnoustie and District Youth Brass Band in 2009 won 1st Place in the 'Premier Section' (Gold Award) and this year achieved national success winning the Advanced Section of the Youth Brass Band Championship.
  • Ross Knight from Carnoustie is an 18 year old award winning tuba player who this year was principal tuba player with the National Youth Orchestra of GB and performed at many of the top venues in the UK and festivals and championships across Europe.
  • The Gordon School of Dancing based in Montrose has been running since 1965, with 200 pupils from the age of two upwards. Pupils have performed in Ireland, England, France, Spain, Prague, USA, Canada and most recently represented Scotland at the Eighth Chinese International Folk and Arts Festival in China.
