A restored 16th century tower-house of Central Angus, Hatton Castle lies immediately to the south-east of Newtyle and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Dundee.

This Z-plan three-storey tower was built in 1575 by the Oliphant family, passed to the Halyburton family in 1627 and then to the son of Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh.

John Lindsay, the 17th Earl of Crawford (c.1598 - 1678), held the castle on behalf of the Covenanters in 1645, but it was soon captured by James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose (1612-50).

The castle featured a large hall on its first floor and, in the basement, cellars and a kitchen, featuring a grand fireplace.

Having become a ruin, the castle was purchased to act a centre of Clan Oliphant in 1983 and restored.
