A general term referring to all of Scotland outwith the Highlands and Islands.

The Lowlands is sometimes more specifically used to delineate land laying between the Highlands and the Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands being applied to that part of the Lowlands occupying the midland valley of Scotland between Fife and the Lothians in the east, and the Firth of Clyde in the west.
