A virtually enclosed tidal basin comprising the estuary of the South Esk River which flows out to the North Sea south of Montrose in Angus. Extending to 750 ha (1850 acres) of designated nature reserve, its waters and mud flats provide a rich feeding ground for thousands of resident and migrant birds. Curlews, oystercatchers and eider ducks are found in large numbers during the summer months and in the autumn pink-footed and greylag geese arrive. The Scottish Wildlife Trust manages the nature reserve and maintains a Wildlife Centre at Rossie Braes overlooking the Montrose Basin to the south.
