Scotland's Churches Scheme
Scotlands-Churches-Scheme

Scotland's Churches Scheme (SCS) was founded in 1994 to serve churches of all denominations in Scotland.

It is governed by its Trustees, guided by an Advisory Council, informed by local representatives throughout Scotland, and served by a full-time Director.

Our aims and purposes are to:

  • PROMOTE spiritual understanding by enabling the public to appreciate all buildings designed for worship and active as living churches
  • ADVANCE the education of the public in history, architecture and other environmental subjects through the study of historic church buildings of all denominations in Scotland, their contents and environs
  • ENCOURAGE co-operation among the churches themselves and between them and their local communities
  • PUBLISH details of churches open to visitors through a handbook Churches to Visit in Scotland as a guide for visitors, and to encourage support for the churches visited through donations, especially for specific appeals
  • RECEIVE donations for churches, in particular or in general, in order to provide when requested advice on the care and reception of visitors and the provision of historical and other information
  • PROMOTE the common purpose of mission through the ministry of welcome for visitors, tourists and pilgrims

SCS encourages churches to:

  • OPEN their doors with a welcoming presence
  • TELL the story of the building, its purpose and the faith which inspired it
  • CARE for visitors in a sensitive and enriching way
  • WORK together with others to make the Church the focus of its community

SCS supports churches with:

  • PUBLICATION of its comprehensive guidebook, Churches to Visit in Scotland
  • FREE ADVICE on all aspects of visitor welcome, publicity, interpretation and exhibitions
  • NETWORK of local representatives in direct contact with headquarters
  • EFFECTIVE national publicity

There are already a number of member churches throughout Angus and new churches are very welcome.
