Angus Glens Ranger Base Opens At Glen Doll

Issued: 26 November 2008Glen Doll Ranger Base

A new, purpose–built centre for use by visitors and the countryside rangers has opened at Glen Doll in the Cairngorms National Park.

Since 1998, Angus Council has provided a ranger service for the popular Angus Glens. Staff previously worked out of Braedownie Farm House, Glen Doll which is some distance from the car park, picnic site and main area of visitor activity.

An increasing number of hill walkers, tourists and educational groups enjoy visiting the glens, and there are now up to 75,000 people using the facilities at Glen Doll each year.

To enable the rangers to improve the service to visitors and manage the site better, the council has constructed a new, purpose-built visitor centre. This centre, made of timber with a traditional larch board exterior, comprises a reception area, project room for group study, rangers' office, messing facilities, storage and public conveniences.

The building cost £395,000 and opened to the public in September. Angus Council received grant funding for the project from Cairngorms National Park Authority, Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage.

Convener of neighbourhood services Jim Millar said: "This new centre will be of real benefit to both our ranger staff and to the many thousands of visitors who enjoy walking in the Glens each year."
