Have Your Say On The South Esk

Issued: 2 June 2008

If you use the River South Esk, whether for business or pleasure, your views are important to a group of organisations keen to help protect and enhance the river through the development of a Catchment Management Plan.

Karen Phillip, the independent Project Officer overseeing development of the Plan explained that this project is the chance for the people of Angus to ensure the South Esk remains a valuable, useful and beautiful asset to the county of Angus for future generations. "Public involvement is a key part of the process," stressed Karen. "It's important that everyone with an interest in the South Esk participates in the development of the Plan."

The project will be launched at the Angus Show in Brechin on Friday, June 6 – Saturday, June 7, 2008, where Karen will be based in the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and Royal Highland Education Trust - Angus Countryside Initiative marquee. "I will be only too happy to explain what is happening and answer questions when I am at the Angus Show," said Karen.

A variety of people depend on the river, which flows from the top of Glen Clova, for their livelihood and for their recreational pursuits. It is also a habitat of great value to wildlife. The aim of the Plan is to bring together all those with an interest in the river, discuss the key issues affecting the river and draw up a list of measures to set out how to manage the river's environmental, economic and social uses in a sustainable way. It is hoped that the Plan will be complete by the end of 2009.

A questionnaire is being sent out to all those identified as having an interest in the River South Esk catchment, and will also be available at the Angus Show. All completed questionnaires will be entered into a prize draw to win dinner for two at the Glen Clova Hotel. In addition, a series of public meetings will be held so people can share their views on the future management of the River South Esk catchment.

For further information, or to be involved in the consultation process, please contact the Project Officer, Karen Phillip, on 01307 47 3198 or email PhillipK@angus.gov.uk - or take the opportunity to talk to Karen at the Angus Show.
