Innovation in Digital Media

The Innovation Portal and the University of Dundee will deliver a short workshop intended for firms involved with the Digital Media sector.

The event will provide an insight to the specialist academic expertise available in the sector, encourage firms to share experiences and identify barriers to Innovation during the group stages of the event. With speakers from Academia and Industry, delegates will come away with a better understanding of why Innovation is necessary, not only to maintain a competitive advantage, but for the very survival in a crowded sector.

The event takes place on Tuesday 27th May at Dundee University Incubator, James Lindsay Place.
 

17.00 – 17.15 - Networking + buffet

17.15 -17.20 – Jamie Henderson (Manager, Innovation Portal)

Introduction and brief overview of the Innovation Portal and some of the funding opportunities available

17.20 – 17.30 – Donna Fordyce (Interactive Tayside)

Interactive Tayside is a partnership between public, private and academic sectors to develop and promote Tayside's digital media industry. Donna will discuss why innovation and academic collaborations have assisted local SMEs in building and maintaining a competitive advantage in a busy local economy. Donna will illustrate using examples of her own involvement with SMEs

17.30 - 17.40 – Grant Alexander (Whitespace Solutions)

Whitespace is a state of the art digital media facility based at the University of Abertay Dundee. The services, facilities and expertise at Whitespace are used regularly by clients from a number of sectors. Grant will discuss some of the areas where whitespace can assist SMEs and highlight some of the consultancy expertise available from the University of Abertay Dundee.

17.40 – 17.55 - Gregor White (University of Abertay Dundee)

Gregor White is a Division Leader in the award winning Computer Arts and Media department based in the University of Abertay. Gregor will discuss some key areas where he can assist local SMEs and explain the benefits of collaborating with the expertise in his department and present a case study of the work completed with Alliance Trust.

17.55 – 18.05 – Stuart Reid (Dynamo Games)

Dynamo Games is a specialist mobile games developer dedicated to bringing the best quality games to the mobile platform. The company received a SMART award to develop a system to allow the updating of mobile phone game data procedure, predominantly for games involving large amounts of data to be sent.Stuart will discuss the application process and how the award enabled Dynamo Games to develop their technology from idea to market.

18.05 – 18.15 – Chris Rowland (Advanced Underwater Surveys Limited)

Chris Rowland is an expert in 3D visualisation at the Centre for Digital Imaging within Duncan of Jordanstone. Chris is the lead academic in the latest University of Dundee spin out company; Advanced Underwater Survey Limited. Chris will discuss how his work can be transferred into industry through medical imaging, forensics, archaeology and environmental applications.
