The first nine students have graduated from an innovative new course for Carers at Angus College.Carers, who look after family, friends or partners who are ill, frail or have a disability, are often overlooked by the system. But the "Learning for Living" course, which offers a City and Guilds qualification, seeks to redress the situation.
Angus College worked in partnership with Angus Carers Centre to create the course. While they recognise the many skills which carers already have, the lecturers also work with them to develop new ones. The course can be used simply for personal development or as a stepping stone into employment or volunteering and is delivered both at college and by distance learning.
Course Leader, Denise Fyfe says "we're delighted with the way the course has gone. We've more than doubled the national average for success…with 67 per cent of students successfully completing the course and all students taking part were awarded the Angus College Certificate of Achievement."
Only one other college in Scotland is qualified to deliver the course at this level.
