Archibald Douglas
Famous People

(b.c.1449 - d.1513) Leader of the 'Red Douglas' clan. Douglas came to prominence after hanging a group of 'familiars' in 1482, who sections of the Scottish nobility regarded as having undue influence on their King (James III). It was his role in this incident that gave rise to him being known as 'Bell-the-Cat'. He fought against the English at the Battle of Flodden (1513), in which his two sons were killed, which so upset him that he himself died shortly after.
