Charles Lyon
Famous People

(b.1699 - d.1728) Noble. Baptised at Glamis, the son of John Lyon, 2nd Earl of Strathmore (1663 - 1712). He succeeded his older brother John Lyon, the 3rd Earl, who had been killed at the Battle of Sheriffmuir (1715). In 1716, Lyon entertained the James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender (1688 - 1766), and his entourage at Glamis Castle. While there, Stuart was able to cure the sick in the chapel by touching them. This was taken by his supporters as a sign that he was the rightful King, that is King James VIII. However, this never came to pass. Stuart's pocket watch can still be seen in Glamis Castle today. Lyon married in Edinburgh (1725), but was killed in Forfar only three years later, following a street brawl.
