Elizabeth (Liz) McColgan

(b.1964) Althlete. Born Liz Lynch in Dundee, she won the Dundee Schools Cross Country Championship in 1976 as a member of the Hawkhill Harriers Club. Liz McColgan won a gold medal for the 10,000 metres in the Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh (1986). She also won a silver medal for the same distance in the Olympics (1988) and a gold medal for the 10,000 metres and bronze medal for the 3000 metres in the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She also won the London Marathon (1996). She opened her own Health Club in Carnoustie in 1999 and began coaching young athletes in Dundee. Named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1991 and awarded an MBE in 1992, McColgan retired from top-class athletics in 2001. She went on to serve as the Chairperson of Scottish Athletics, the body responsible for developing the sport in Scotland. McColgan was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
