King Edward I
Famous People

(b.1239 - d.1307) English monarch. Born at Westminster, Edward succeeded his father Henry III as King of England in 1272, having spent time on a Crusade to the Holy Land. He married Eleanor of Castille in 1254. At his coronation he received the homage of Alexander III of Scotland (1241-86) and, following the death of the Maid of Norway (1290), Edward re-asserted the tenuous English claim to the rule of Scotland. In 1296 open warfare with Scotland broke out and Edward marched North of the border where he accepted John Balliol's surrender of the crown of Scotland and returned South with the Stone of Destiny. Following the crowning of Robert the Bruce at Scone in 1306, Edward headed North with an army but died in July 1307 near Carlisle.
