The name Logan probably came from the place of the same name in East Ayrshire, which was most-likely derived from the Gaelic 'lagan' meaning 'little hollow'. The name appears in Roxburghshire (Scottish Borders) in the early 13th Century and later in Angus.
The family held the Barony of Restalig (Edinburgh) from the 14th Century. The influence of this branch of the family fell away after the Gowrie Conspiracy of 1600, in which Sir Robert Logan was implicated.
