(b.1585 - d.1661) Royalist and soldier. Most-likely born at Bolshan (Angus), Maule became a pageboy to King James VI (1566 - 1625) and accompanied his King to London when James acceded to the throne of England in 1603. He was appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber, a position which he continued to hold under King Charles I (1600 - 49). Married three times, his children by his first wife, Frances (d.1624), included George (the 2nd Earl) and Elizabeth, who married John Lyon, the 2nd Earl of Kinghorne. His second wife, Mary (d.1636), was a maid of honour to Henrietta, wife of Charles I. His third wife, Mary, was the daughter of John Erskine, 2nd Earl of Mar and widow of William Keith, 6th Earl Marischal. Maule was granted the Barony of Panmure (1610) and lands in Northamptonshire (1625). He was made Sheriff Principal of Forfarshire (1632), Baron of Brechin and Navar (1634) and was granted lands which had previously been part of the Abbacy of Arbroath (1642). In the Civil War Maule was a Royalist, fighting for his King at York (1642) and had risen to the rank of Colonel in the Scottish Army by the time he fought alongside the King at Oxford in 1646. In the same year, he was created Earl of Panmure and Lord Maule of Brechin and Navar and was granted the lands and tiends of the Bishopric of Brechin (1647). Maule was buried at Panbride (Angus).
