(b.1759 - d.1838) Lexicographer. Born in Glasgow, the son of a minister, Jamieson attended the University in that city followed by classes at the University of Edinburgh. In 1789 he completed his theological training and became a minister in the Secession Church at Forfar. He came to the Anti-Burgher Church in Nicholson Street (Edinburgh) in 1797, but went on to become a major force in bringing the 'New Licht' factions together as the United Secession Church in 1820. Jamieson compiled the 'Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language' (1808) and wrote a number of theological and antiquarian texts as well as poetry. He edited Barbour's 'Bruce' and Blind Harry's 'Wallace'. Jamieson was also a friend of the author Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832). He died in Edinburgh.
