A residential and resort town on the North Sea coast of Angus, Carnoustie is situated 11 miles (18 km) east of Dundee. It is the youngest of the seven Angus burghs and owes its development to the prosperity of Dundee and to golf. Its spacious sandy golfing links include the championship Burnside and Buddon Links courses, the British Open first being played here in 1931. Westhaven and Easthaven on the outskirts of Carnoustie were fishing villages. The local economy is also dependent on engineering and the manufacture of machinery, maltings and light service industries. Carnoustie Gala Week is an annual summer event. Carnoustie benefits from two railway stations; Carnoustie and Golf Street.
