Brechin Cathedral
Brechin Cathedral and Round Tower

Built as a monastery by David I in the mid-12th Century, parts of Brechin Cathedral date to the 8th and 9th centuries, and today this lovely church houses a remarkable collection of carved stones, some of Pictish origin. Following various periods of neglect, and some unfortunate 'improvements', the body of the Cathedral itself has been renovated to its original medieval state.

The round tower, an example of the Irish type and one of only two remaining in Scotland, was originally free standing but was incorporated into the cathedral during the 13th Century. Standing 26m (85 feet) in height, it is characterised by windows high in its walls, and a remarkable carved doorway only accessible by ladder.
