Dunninald House

A mansion and an estate located 2 miles (3 km) south southwest of Montrose.

The third property in the vicinity, Dunninald Castle was built in the Gothic-revival style to the designs of Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham (1776 - 1855) for Peter Arkley in 1824; James Gillespie Graham was also responsible for the famous Montrose Steeple.

Little remains of Black Jack's Castle, which was the first. The second castle dated from the 17th century and was also home to the Grays.

Dunninald Castle lies in a planned landscape dating from 1740 which includes a walled garden, woodland walks and a ha ha.  The walled garden is much admired; it is traditional with mixed borders, vegetables and a greenhouse.

Still a family home, the property is open to the public.
