This museum was founded in 1955 by Mrs Greta Michie and is now run by the people of Glenesk. It is housed in a typical glen shooting lodge called "The Retreat".

Displays of costumes, artefacts and records tell the story of the glen. Reconstructions of rooms from the 1890s - including a children's room - allow the visitor to step back into the past. Ask about ongoing events and activities!

The museum has recently undergone a challenging conservation exercise and will feature new displays and interpretation when its state of the art museum building re-opens in April 2007. Glenesk Folk Museum, The Retreat

Rain or shine, the Retreat is perfect to begin a visit to Glenesk. There is parking, toilets and full disabled access throughout. Relax in the licensed tearoom which serves refreshments, meals and home baking. There is local information available and friendly staff who can help plan your visit. The well stocked gift shop is full of crafts and souvenirs.

The Retreat is available for booking for conferences, wedding receptions and other occasions by arrangement throughout the year. Catering can be provided.

Along the road at Tarfside there is more parking, a children's play park and toilets. Overnight camping is permitted in the adjacent field. You can find more information about walking and wildlife at Invermark Car Park.

The Retreat is a striking white builing on the right hand side of the Glenesk road, 8 miles north from the signposted turning for Glenesk from the B966 Edzell/Fettercairn road. You can join the B966 by following signs for Edzell from the A90.

Weekends only.

June until mid October
12noon - 6pm daily.

Opening Time Exceptions:

The Retreat can be booked out of hours or out of season for private functions, conferences etc. Catering can be provided. Licensed.
