Angus Council's Carnoustie Country golf initiative is now generating over £1 million a year for the Angus economy.

Carnoustie Country markets over 30 courses in the Angus area and has created a successful range of tailored golf packages and tournaments to encourage ever greater numbers of golfers to stay and play in this area.

The council's spokesperson for economic development councillor David May welcomed the latest set of figures (reported to the council's Infrastructure Services Committee) saying: "Carnoustie Country is bringing enormous benefit to Angus with its tournaments and packages strengthening our reputation as a top golfing destination.

"Carnoustie Country's two flagship golf tournaments generated well over £200,000 for the local economy this year. The 2008 Carnoustie Country Classic attracted over 160 competitors from all over the UK and Europe and the Tartan Day Scotland International Golf Challenge now has a loyal following of competitors from China, USA, Canada and South Africa," said councillor May.

"Golf is a key visitor attraction for Angus and the council will continue to invest in its promotion to encourage even greater numbers of golfers to come to this area."

The Carnoustie Country portfolio includes various passes and tickets, which enable golfers to play on Angus golf courses at special rates.

In 2008, 287 customers took advantage of the Carnoustie Country Dream Ticket which offers a round of golf on the Carnoustie Championship Course and Angus' three Open qualifying courses. That, coupled with the sale of 756 golf passes which entitle the pass holder to play their choice of three out of the 14 Angus golf courses, generated an estimated expenditure in the local economy of over £753,000.

The targeting of Irish, Canadian and English golfing markets following the Open has also brought rewards this year. This included a week long stay by 100 members of Ireland's Monks Golfing Society in June, who played Carnoustie Championship, Kirriemuir and Letham Grange golf courses. As well as bringing in over £50,000 to the local economy the group was so enthusiastic about their time in Angus they have already made plans to return in 2010.
