Forfar, is a lively, historic market town with a population of 13,206 (Census 2001 Forfar), 12% of the population of Angus.
It has an attractive town centre which has retained much of its traditional character.
It is an important employment and service centre with the administrative centre for Angus Council located here and large companies including major textiles and manufacturing plant; Don & Low Ltd; A M Phillip Ltd selling industrial machinery and vehicles; David Ritchie Ltd; an international oil and gas equipment and supplies company and Strathmore Foods Ltd; a food and drink processing company. It is also home to the Strathmore Mineral Water headquarters and to the famous Forfar bridie.
The fertile land surrounding Forfar means that for many years agriculture has had a major impact on local industry and employment, and there are several local businesses based on agricultural engineering, potato breeding and distribution.
The physical fabric of Forfar is in the process of significant change as a consequence of economic restructuring. Strategically situated adjacent to the A90 dual carriageway between Dundee and Aberdeen is the new 65 acre Orchardbank Business Park; a £3 million joint venture between Angus Council and Hermiston Securities. Already located on the Park are the Council's Headquarters, Housing, and Social Work offices and the new Guide Dogs for the Blind training facility. Under construction is a new building for the Council's Print & Design unit and interest for plots elsewhere on the site is strong.
A new superstore was constructed in 2006 extending the range and quality of the local shopping provision to five supermarkets. A large DIY store has also recently joined the bustling shopping town centre which is full of a variety of specialist retailers.
Development of a community resource centre providing integrated community health and social work services for the Forfar and Kirriemuir area has involved the completion of a new community hospital at Whitehills that has replaced facilities at Whitehills Hospital and Forfar Infirmary.
Forfar is easy to get to, located just off the A90. A 3.5 acre plot on this dual carriageway is available to attract a hotel or Travelodge with roadside services, and marketing of this site is ongoing.
