Astute Grant Application Benefits Forfar Business

Issued: 21 June 2005

A Forfar business has benefited from a fund which was set up to help individuals and companies in Angus and Mearns establish and improve their businesses.

Astute (Scotland) Ltd., which produces print, design and stationery, received a grant from the Angus and Mearns Economic Development Fund to help with the recruitment of high-quality staff. The grant, which helped finance the recruitment of the staff, has ensured that Astute can compete in the marketplace by enabling the company to offer better conditions.

Alastair Donald, Managing Director, said that the grant had allowed the company to employ additional quality staff earlier than they had anticipated, saying: "As a result of this project we are ahead of schedule in our development, not only in terms of the amount of staff but more importantly in the quality of our staff."

The Fund, which is halfway through its three-year duration, was set up with an investment of ?750,000 from GlaxoSmithKline in recognition of the economic and social impact of the pharmaceutical company's downturn in business at their Montrose site.

The aim of the Fund is to assist individuals and companies in various ways - business start-ups, further training and development, business expansion and the gaining of greater business expertise. Funds for grants are still available and further applications are welcome. Applicants to the Fund, which is administered and managed by Scottish Business in the Community, will find the procedure simple and the Fund itself easily accessible, with Alastair describing the process as "Very simple".

Fund applicants, whose workplaces must be within 21 miles of Montrose - or their home if unemployed - can receive further details of the Angus and Mearns Economic Development Fund by telephoning Business Gateway on 0845 6096611.
