In the Tayside Local Economic Forum area, the construction sector accounts for 5.5% of the workforce (Source: Futureskills Scotland Tayside Labour Market Profile 2003). Although the numbers employed in the industry fell by some 12% in the five years between 1998 and 2003, twice the national average, it is vital that the area sustains a healthy construction sector.
For more information on fluctuations and trends in the area, see the Tayside Labour Market Profile.
The importance of the construction industry to the Scottish economy as a whole is reflected in the numbers employed in the sector (200,000) and its worth - approximately £10 billion, which represents approximately 10% of Scotland's GDP. To put this into perspective, the Scottish construction industry is twice the size of the agriculture sector and almost three times the size of the combined utility services. The industry makes a substantial contribution to the economic development of Scotland.
The Scottish Construction Forum is 'an industry led initiative which aims to drive forward improvements in Scotland's construction sector. With members drawn from both the public and private sectors, the Forum seeks to encourage best practice, improve research and increase communication across the construction sector. By providing strategic advice to the industry, the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament, the Forum will work to boost productivity and improve standards within the sector.'
