Financial Professional & Business Services

Financial and professional services in Angus

Scotland is universally recognised as a global finance leader, offering an ideal location for a career in this sector. The country is the fifth largest financial services centre in Europe, and in the UK, Edinburgh is the largest centre outside London. 7 of the top 20 companies in Scotland are financial services companies and the industry accounts for around £5 billion or 6% of Scotland's GDP.

Scotland as a whole is a leading centre for financial services in Europe, and is the second largest UK centre for finance after London. Many international financial services companies are headquartered and located in Scotland providing them with easy access to London, European and worldwide markets.

Financial services continue to be the fastest growing sector of the Scottish economy. In the last five years it has grown by 34.4 per cent compared to the whole of UK financial services, which increased by 16.6 per cent, and the overall Scottish economy, which grew by 8.8 per cent. Much of the growth and success of Scottish financial services can be directly attributed to a skilled, stable, flexible and motivated workforce.

The industry employs 113,000 people directly, and supports a further 100,000 people throughout the country in related jobs. Fields include banking, insurance and pensions, investment management, investment operations/asset servicing, accounting, compliance, risk analysis auditing, actuary, mortgage advice and information technology.

Most jobs are located in central Scotland, in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow but Angus is an important part of the national picture, with Dundee and Angus area sustaining 3490 jobs in the financial sector and related business support. Adjacent areas Aberdeen and Fife together have 16500 jobs in the sector. 28 per cent of financial services employees are managers and senior officials and 14 per cent work in associate professional and technical roles, and average earnings are significantly higher in financial services than the Scottish average.

The Strategy for the Financial Services Industry in Scotland outlines a vision being developed and to be delivered by a unique partnership of government and industry working together to continue to develop Scotland's position as a leading international financial centre.

New air routes from Scotland to key financial services locations and further development of the highly skilled workforce available to the industry in Scotland, mean long-term prospects for the financial sector are good in all areas, including Angus.
