Building on both its oil & gas and agricultural traditions, Angus is increasingly looking at the economic potential for renewable sources of energy and in particular biofuels.
Angus Council is currently part of a partnership comprising Aberdeenshire Council, Angus Council, Fife Council, Highland Council, Moray Council, Perth & Kinross Council, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise Energy. Biofuels could have the potential to provide the energy industry with a stable market at a time of CAP reform and on this basis the partnership are examining the potential for development of the biofuels industry and in particular a processing plant in the East of Scotland.
The partnership recently commissioned a study to identify means of optimising the value of the oilseed rape (OSR) crop to growers in the study area, which produces around 75% of the OSR grown in Scotland. The report titled "The Economic Evaluation of Biodiesel Production from Oilseed Rape Grown in North and East Scotland" can be obtained from the Angus Council website www.angus.gov.uk/publications or from the consultants at SAC Craibstone Estate, Aberdeen.
