Service Sector

The service sector accounted for around 35 per cent of the whole Scottish economy in 1997. The service sector in Angus employs 18% of the area's workforce with 2140 businesses.*

Tourism is a particularly important service industry in Angus and Dundee, where it supports 7,600 jobs, around 9% of the workforce. Local employers found in the tourism trade include hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions such as Glamis Castle, Pictavia and the House of Dun. 

As part of the Angus tourism strategy, the Scottish Tourist Board, working in partnership with the private sector, Scottish Golf Union, the Enterprise Networks and sportscotland, is developing a new golf strategy for Scotland. Golf is a key niche market for Angus and Dundee and the area has some of Scotland's finest golf courses, including the Carnoustie Championship links.

Angus also has a strong retail sector with an indoor shopping centre in Arbroath and unique shops located on Carnoustie, Montrose, Brechin and Forfar high streets.
