Angus has long been a popular visitor destination. From the traditional seaside towns of the coast to the outward bound activities available in the glens, Angus has much to offer the visitor. Historic castles, unspoilt beaches and majestic glens provide the backdrop to outdoor pursuits and leisure activities.
Special events, such as the highly successful Arbroath Sea Fest, based on a Council initiative, provide entertainment for thousands of additional visitors to Angus while the new visitor attraction at Pictavia near Brechin highlights the Pictish heritage of Angus.
Angus is a mecca for golfers, with the world-famous Carnoustie Championship course the jewel in the golfing crown of Angus. Many other links and inland courses provide challenges and enjoyment to golfers of all levels of ability and the Carnoustie Country initiative has been formed to provide golfing holidays for all budgets and skill levels at a range of hotels and golf courses in and around Angus.
Carnoustie hosted the Open Championship in 1999 and again in 2007, re-affirming its position as one of the very finest golf courses. Angus Council is working with the local community to attract other major golfing events to Carnoustie.
During 2005 it is estimated that UK residents took 0.69m tourist trips to Angus & Dundee, stayed for 2.39m bed nights and spent £98m in the area.
Within the UK market, 66% of trips were taken by Scottish residents whilst 32% were taken by English visitors.
Visitors from overseas took 0.09m trips to the area and stayed 1.05m nights during 2005. Overseas tourism spending in Angus & Dundee totalled £32m.
Tourism related employment accounts for 6.8% of the workforce in the area and according to this research, the main reasons people visit Angus & Dundee is for a holiday, to visit friends and thirdly for business trips.
The largest numbers of overseas visitors are from America, then Australia, with Australians being the biggest spenders in Angus and Dundee. Glamis Castle attracts the highest number of visitors to the area.
The sub-sectors making the largest contribution to gross value added in 2004 are Hotels (22%) and Restaurants (20%). See the following breakdown of sub-sectors contribution to gross value added;
