Renewable Energy

Evidence suggests that the global climate is changing as a result of human activities, in particular the burning of fossil fuels. This climate change is known as the "greenhouse effect" and is thought to responsible for a rise in global temperatures and an increase in rainfall.

In response to this change, alternatives to traditional energy systems are being explored, such as the production of renewable energy by water, wind, biomass, tidal and solar energy systems.

Scotland has a rich variety of renewable energy resources, including 25% of Europe's wind energy resource. Scotland has a target of 18% of electricity to come from renewable resources by 2010, rising to 40% by 2020.

Energy efficiency and non-polluting power are essential in promoting sustainable development that is economically, environmentally and ecologically beneficial to Angus.

In the future more utilities will be powered by renewable energy.
