Kirriemuir Heritage Trust

The Angus town of Kirriemuir, and the surrounding area, has a unique heritage – and Kirriemuir Heritage Trust has been established to protect, record, promote and celebrate all aspects of this heritage.Kirriemuir Town House

At the moment, Kirriemuir Heritage Trust is focusing on a very special aspect of Kirriemuir's heritage – the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kirrie's most famous son, JM Barrie, probably best-known – and certainly best-loved – through his creation of Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, Tinkerbell, Wendy, Captain Hook and, of course, Never Never Land…

In 2010, it will be 150 years since James Matthew Barrie was born in a weaver's cottage in Kirriemuir. To mark this anniversary, Kirriemuir Heritage Trust is working in partnership with Angus Council and the people of Kirriemuir and beyond to develop an inspiring legacy for Barrie's Little Red Town - a 'Celebration of Imagination'.

In honour of JM Barrie's fantastic imagination, Kirriemuir 2010 will inspire young people – and others – to expand their creative skills through writing, drama, art, dance and books.

At the moment, events planned include:

  • Young People's Book Week
  • The Ball Of Kirriemuir – which will include the first public performance of a dance specially created for the occasion and performed by local children
  • Barrie's Big Birthday Bash – a massive children's party in Kirriemuir Town Hall
  • Opportunities to create and contribute to specially-commissioned pieces of public art in and around Kirriemuir
  • Drama workshops
  • Publication of a collector's edition of a new book about JM Barrie
  • Dramatisations of JM Barrie's works in places Barrie visited when back home in KirriemuirJM Barrie

As well as planning Kirriemuir 2010, Kirriemuir Heritage Trust is helping to provide the town with a Heritage Trail which marks significant historical sites and sites of interest with plaques. And, beyond 2010, Kirriemuir Heritage Trust will support other projects which promote local heritage and culture, encourage genealogical research and, above all, help to ensure the continuation of an equally inspiring heritage for future generations.

Kirriemuir Heritage Trust is a Registered Scottish Charity (SCO 39159).
