Monifieth has grown around an ancient settlement, dating back to the 9th Century. Until the 19th Century Monifieth was a sleepy little village, but the rise of the local jute industry and the revival of the foundry saw workers pouring into the town and the population soared.
Today, Monifieth has a population of 7,900 and is a well known golfing centre, having hosted the Scottish Amateur Golf Championship and the qualifying rounds for the Open Championship.
Monifieth spent 21 years as part of Dundee District, but was warmly welcomed back into Angus in 1996 after a local government re-organisation. Monifieth has good links with other coastal towns in Angus by road and by train and is a popular place to live with those commuting to work in Dundee. Monifieth has excellent local schools and community health services.
Information about allocation of housing and relocation advice can be found at the local housing office in Monifieth which serves Monifieth, Wellbank, Duntrune and surrounding landward areas. Telephone: 01382 534900.
