People have settled at Monifieth from the early days of man, and many relics and sites of archaeological interest witness this today. The people of Monifieth played their part in the whale and sea industry which thrived in the in the eighteenth and mid-nineteenth century.
Many Pictish stones were found in Monifieth, most notably in St. Rule's graveyard, indicating the area was an important Pictish settlement. At Ardestie 2 miles north from the village is a vitrified Iron Age Fort and close by a cluster of earth dwellings dating from the first century.

Golfing ExcellenceMonifieth lies near the most southerly point of Angus near Carnoustie. It is most famous today as a centre of golfing excellence, and the course here is used as a qualifier for the Open Championship.
