The coastal town of Carnoustie (pop 9,250) is one of Scotland's top golfing resorts.
The town is famous for its association with golf and welcomed thousands of visitors to the Open Championship in 1999, the sixth time the town's Championship Course has hosted the world renowned event.
The landmark Carnoustie Golf Course Hotel and a host of hotels and B&Bs in the town provide excellent accommodation for the players and visitors who flock to the town for golf events and holidays.
From the first competition in 1931, many of the most famous names in golf have graced the course, including the event winners Tommy Armour (1931), Henry Cotton (1937), Ben Hogan (1953), Gary Player (1968), Tom Watson(1975) and Paul Lawrie (1999).
As an added incentive to players, Carnoustie also sports three other excellent courses.
Carnoustie is one of the youngest Angus burghs, celebrating its 200th birthday in 1997, when the town came alive in celebration with torchlit processions and a spectacular riding of the town's boundaries.
