The county town of Forfar (pop 13,500) lies at the heart of Angus and is the administrative centre of Angus Council.
A favourite royal residence in the 12th and 13th centuries, and an important religious centre, the story of Forfar is captured in one of the most imaginative museums in Scotland.
The Meffan, a listed building in the town's West High Street, utilises advanced new exhibition systems to take you on a magical trip back in time with its resident exhibition 'The Forfar Story'. The Meffan also hosts a variety of contemporary touring exhibitions.
The town became largely dependant on the textile industry in the 1700s. This has continued today with a major industrial textile plant operating in the town.
Because of Forfar's fertile location, agriculture is an important factor in the local economy and farmers gather in the town on a weekly basis for the cattle mart.
To the north-east of Forfar, Aberlemno is an agricultural based community whose churchyard contains some of the finest Pictish sculptured stones in Angus.
