Montrose (pop 11,500) is the most northerly of the Angus coastal towns situated between the mouths of the Rivers South and North Esk.
Montrose has a spectacular setting overlooking a two-mile wide tidal lagoon - a wildlife sanctuary of international importance - and the town boasts the widest high street in Scotland with picturesque closes leading to secluded gardens.
Montrose is an attractive burgh with a wealth of architecture, including classical town houses built by the merchants who amassed their fortunes out of its busy harbour in years gone by.
Its port is still a centre for international trade, and it has grasped the opportunities presented by the development of North Sea oil and gas fields.
Just outside Montrose is the magnificent 18th Century House of Dun, designed by the Scottish architect William Adam and built in 1730 for John Erskine.
