From the golfing meccas of Monifieth and Carnoustie to the thriving oil port of Montrose, Angus towns each have their own unique character and attractions.

The largest town is Arbroath, long famous for its Smokies - smoked fish considered a delicacy all over the world, and a traditional seaside resort with a picturesque harbour.

Arbroath is also home to one of Scotland's most important historic sites - Arbroath Abbey where the Declaration of Scottish Independence was signed in 1320.

Also on the coast is Montrose, with its spectacular setting overlooking a two-mile wide tidal lagoon - a wildlife sanctuary of international importance.

Nestling in the Angus countryside is the Cathedral City of Brechin famous for its ancient round tower - one of only two in Scotland.

Known as the Gateway to the Glens, Kirriemuir is an attractive tourist centre and is an ideal base for the keen hill-walker or mountaineer.

The bustling market town of Forfar is home to a variety of specialist shops and is noted for its wide variety of places to eat out.

Carnoustie and Monifieth attract lovers of golf from all over the world - indeed Carnoustie recently hosted the highly successful 2007 Open Golf Championships.
