Literature in Angus

Perhaps Angus' most famous place in literature is in the pages of Shakespeare's chilling tragedy Macbeth..  Glamis Castle and StatueGlamis Castle is the backdrop to the Scottish Play, as it is known within the theatre.

Angus is also the birthplace of James M Barrie and one of his most famous creations, Peter Pan. JM Barrie was born in a humble weaver's cottage on 9th April 1860 at Kirriemuir. The cottages were still earthen floored, the rafters still bare, the roofs still thatched, and every second house had a handloom. During Barrie's early years, the power loom arrived. Barrie's father gave up weaving in favour of work as a clerk, and Barrie went away to school in the west of Scotland. His childhood home is now a museum in the care of the National Trust For Scotland and every year Peter Pan afficionados come from far and wide to visit, and to discover the inspiration for the Neverland and the Lost Boys.

The 1920s saw a burgeoning of literary and artistic activity in Angus, when Hugh MacDiarmid , Edwin Muir , sculptor William Lamb and painter Edward Baird all lived in Montrose. Author Hugh MacDiarmid (Christopher Grieve) lived and worked in Montrose at that time, as assistant editor and reporter for the Montrose Review newspaper.
Daughter of the Erskines of Dun at Montrose, poet and author Violet Jacob was inspired by the landscape, wildlife and stories of her youth. Her poem 'The Wild Geese' has recently been put to music by Jim Reid of Arbroath, and is beloved anthem of Angus exiles everywhere.

More recently Angus has had more than its fair share of literary scions, including the poet Helen Cruickshank who was born in Hillside, near Montrose. Her love of the Angus countryside, and Scotland in general, is the legacy of her work.
