Performing Arts in Angus

The performing arts are central to the life of Angus.

 Steve Byrne

From street theatre to national orchestral performances and major folk and contemporary touring events, Angus supports a wide variety of entertainment. Venues are varied -  stately mansions and castles, open air events in country park settings, local theatres, hotels and pubs, and community halls.

The Hairst is the Angus annual festival of the performing arts, featuring a wealth of events during the summer months, celebrating all things Scottish, and focusing on the traditional music of Angus.

Another highlight of the summer season is the Grand Scottish Prom, and Opera prom, an open air picnic concert in the grounds of Glamis Castle over a weekend in August, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and internationally renowned soloists.

The Smokie Blues Festival in Arbroath takes place in July each year,  while the Brechin Arts Festival generates an exciting range of musical events in September.

All the year round, there is great music to be found: Montrose Folk Club hosts appearances by national and international artistes from contemporary and traditional genres, every two weeks on Tuesday evenings from August - June. The Airlie Arms Hotel in Kirriemuir has regular singers nights, frequented by some of the cream of Scottish folk singers.

The House of Dun, a National Trust for Scotland
property by Montrose, hosts a varied programme of events throughout the year, even when the House itself is closed to visitors. Expect to find chamber music, folk music and bothy ballads, poetry recitals, and theatrical touring performances.

In Arbroath, the Webster Theatre  will soon re-open after a major programme of refurbishment to secure the future of the theatre, and ensure the place of Angus at the forefront of performing arts.  Arbroath Musical Society has been performing for the people of Angus and beyond for over 100 years.
