Angus Archives is the main resource for family and local history in Angus. The facility is located in a beautiful rural setting at the Hunter Library, Restenneth, just 2 miles outside Forfar and adjacent to the ruined 12th century Restenneth Priory, burial site of a son of Robert the Bruce.
The collections held cover over 800 years of Angus history, ranging from the records of the Angus burghs and their successors to private papers. Resources include the records of the former burghs of Angus/Forfarshire (Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Montrose and Monifieth), the records of the Angus County Council and a large collection of private papers in our MS collection. Angus Archives also hold an extensive collection of local history books, genealogical sources, Valuation Rolls and photographs.
Angus Council operates seven full time libraries as well as part time and mobile libraries covering all of Angus. Each of the full time libraries in Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth and Montrose offer internet access and a wide range of collections for the historical researcher. The collections can be accessed in each library on the computer catalogue by title, title keyword, author and by subject.
