Angus Archives

Restenneth PrioryAngus Archives is the main resource for family and local history in Angus. The facility is located in a beautiful rural setting at the Hunter Library, Restenneth, just 2 miles outside Forfar and adjacent to the ruined 12th century Restenneth Priory, burial site of a son of Robert the Bruce.

The collections held cover over 800 years of Angus history, ranging from the records of the Angus burghs and their successors to private papers. Resources include the records of the former burghs of Angus/Forfarshire (Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Montrose and Monifieth), the records of the Angus County Council and a large collection of private papers in our MS collection. Angus Archives also hold an extensive collection of local history books, genealogical sources, Valuation Rolls and photographs.


Angus Libraries

Angus Council operates seven full time libraries as well as part time and mobile libraries covering all of Angus. Each of the full time libraries in Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth and Montrose offer internet access and a wide range of collections for the historical researcher. The collections can be accessed in each library on the computer catalogue by title, title keyword, author and by subject.


Angus Museums

Angus offers a wide range of museums and historic visitor centres which really bring local history alive. Angus Council maintains museums in Arbroath, Brechin, Forfar, Kirriemuir and Montrose and there is a wide range of National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland museums and visitor centres. Gems such as the Angus Folk Museum and the Glenesk Folk Museum provide a fascinating glimpse of life in Angus in the past while aviation visitor centres at Kirriemuir and Montrose offer insights to Angus' military past.


Tay Valley Family History Society

The Tay Valley Family History Society is a centre for family history research in the Tay Valley area (the former counties of Angus, Fife, Kinross and Perthshire). Resources and services include a research centre in Dundee, a large library of genealogical and local history material and guidance and assistance to members and visitors.


Angus Mailing List

The Angus Mailing List is a mailing list for the county of Angus, hosted by Rootsweb and in operation since 1998.


Angus Surnames List

The Angus Surnames Interest List, which is operated in association with The Tay Valley Family History Society and GENUKI , invites submissions from family historians and genealogists with specific interests in the county of Angus
