A Two Day Itinerary

The starting place for your journey. Here you can discover many secrets of the Picts and see the Pictish Edzell, Farnell and Menmuir stones.

Average visit time is 2 hours.

Brechin Cathedral and Round Tower

Brechin Cathedral has a collection of four Pictish stones, and the late 11th / early 12th century Round Tower, one of only two in Scotland.

Normally open Mon-Sat 9.00-4.00. Open Sundays for worship

Average visit time is 1 hour.

Aberlemno

On the roadside at Aberlemno stand three stones. Two are good examples of early Pictish symbol stones, and the third is a Pictish cross-slab with a ringed cross on the front and a hunding scene on the back.

St Vigean's Museum

A total of 34 carved stones have been found in St Vigean's Churchyard, dating from the 7th to 11th centuries. Six of the stones on display are incised with pictish symbols and include the famous inscribed Drosten stone.

The Meffan Institute

The Meffan Institute tells 'The Forfar Story' and displays an impressive collection of Pictish and Early Christian carved stones, including Kirriemuir, Wester Deunnon and Kirkbuddo.
