Perhaps the most famous food export is the traditional Arbroath Smokie. These wood smoked Haddock are a delicacy that should not be missed. A culinary delight exclusive to the area, the Smokie is protected under European Law as a 'Protected Geographical Location' with the same regard as that maintained for Parma Ham and Champagne. A real Smokie is only from Arbroath. Find them near the Harbour at Arbroath or online by searching our listings. To see a video on how to prepare a three-part Smokie starter, visit our Smokie Sensation page.
This is a treat not to be missed! The Bridie is a satifying meat and onion pastie and visitors come from far and wide to sample the famous Bridie. The original comfort food, the Bridie is the true taste of home for many Angus folk around the world.
If whisky is your tipple, don't miss the Glencadam, distilled at Brechin and a connoisseur's choice. Enjoy a local dram at any time of year, by a cosy fire in good company in Autumn and Winter, or let the warmth of a Summer's evening release the hints of the Glens in the flavour. Perhaps you like a drop of water to bring out the flavour? Look no further than the fine bottled Strathmore Mineral Water, from the pure waters of Angus' Strathmore Valley.
Our lively local family retailers are giving the big supermarkets a run for their money in each town - good fresh fish suppliers abound, especially in the coastal towns, and excellent family butchers can be found everywhere. Bakeries are particularly good, and fresh local soft fruit and a variety of vegetables can often be purchased at market gardens in the countryside, in season. The Angus Farmers Market is a great source of fresh and interesting produce, from smoked fish and beef to farm-made cheeses and locally manufactured chutneys and preserves.
Angus is also a haven for craftspeople working in a variety of media and styles. Find something handcrafted in Angus, from fragrant natural soaps to textiles, ceramics or wood.
