Add & Edit Listings Guide

Important Information for Using the Add & Edit Listings Service

Angusahead.com Add & Edit Listings service allows business and organisations in Angus to submit details for publication in the Angus Listings on angusahead.com and in associated off-line publications such as the Angus Business Directory.

You don’t need to have any technical knowledge or web skills to use the Add & Edit Listings service. Simply provide the relevant information by filling in a form and the system will automatically format the information and create or update your Listings web page.

This guide outlines how the service works and the main steps in adding or editing Listings.

1. Getting Started - Registering & Login

Registering for the Add & Edit Listings service

To use the angusahead.com Add & Edit Listings service you must first register. This is to help us to identify that the request to publish information is coming from a legitimate source.  The registration form asks basic details about you and your organisation including contact details in case we need to get in touch with you about your Listing.

Logging in to the Add & Edit Listings Service

Each time you use Add & Edit Listings service you must login to gain access. Logging in allows us to restrict access to these pages and keep them secure. Most importantly it allows us to monitor and easily identify who has added and edited information and is responsible for each listing. You will find the login form in the my angusahead area.

The Manage Listings Page

After you register or login to the Add & Edit Listings service you will be automatically taken to the Manage Listings page. This allows you to choose to Add a new Listing or Edit a Listing page you may have created on a previous visit. Any Listings you have created previously will appear on the page. You will be able to select them for editing.

2. Adding new Listings

Selecting Categories for your Listing

To add a new Listing you must select the category of Listing you wish to create.  Each category has a form with fields for information, which is specific to the category.

The basic Listings category is the Business and Organisation category which offers contact details, a web link and a description. There are other more specialist categories for tourism, leisure and retail organisations as well as categories for Events and Initiatives and Associations.  The Listing categories are described in the Listings by Category page in the main Angus Listings menu.

Tourism, Leisure & Retail Organisations

If you are a tourism, leisure or retail organisation you may be listed in the Business & Organisation category with a basic entry and may also have further, more specific and detailed Listings under other categories such as Accommodation, Attractions & Activities, Shopping, or Eating, Drinking & Entertainment.

For instance a large tourism and leisure complex, which contains a hotel, a day visitor leisure facility, a restaurant and shop and is holding seasonal party nights could add Listings under several categories as follows:

  • an Accommodation Listing page for the hotel;
  • an Attraction and Activities page for the leisure facility;
  • a specific Eating Drinking and Entertainment page for the restaurant and function room;
  • a retail listing for the shop; and
  • An event listing for the Party nights.

If you are a tourism, leisure or retail business be sure that you select the relevant categories as this will allow you to submit more detailed and appropriate information to help promote your business. If you wish you can also complete a Business and Organisation form for a general entry, although remember to check that these pages do not exist already.

What happens if I Add a new Listing without realising that I was already listed?

New Listings will not overwrite an existing Listing but will result in duplicate Listings within the same category, which can be confusing for visitors to angusahead.com. The Angus Listings will be routinely monitored for duplicate Listings pages and where these are picked up the angusahead.com team will delete duplicates and consolidate information into a single Listing. If yours is a duplicate entry we may need to contact you when consolidating information.

3. Filling in the Listings Entry Form

It is important that you complete each section as this will allow you to get the most from the Angus Listings and ensure your Listings are visible to angusahead.com visitors. There are several sections in each Listings entry form and these are explained below.

  • Your Listings Details
  • Categorise Your Listing: Channel, Topics & Location
  • Categorise Your Listing: Sub-Category
  • Descriptions
  • Facilities & Additional Information

Your Listings Details

This section asks you to provide address and contact details for your Listing and a web link to allow site visitors to click-through to your own website.

The contact details for this section may not be the same as those you submitted in the Registration form.  For instance your organisation may have a business or administrative office, but you may have several customer facilities. Whereas you would supply your business or administrative contact details in the registration form, in this section you would supply the details for the facility or event which is the subject of the Listing.

Categorise Your Listing: Channel, Topics & Location

Visitors to angusahead.com can browse and search the site by selecting a channel, topics of interest or a location.  In addition site visitors can register for my angusahead and personalise their home page by selecting a channel, topic or location.

If a your Listing is not categorised by channel, topics or location then it will not be included in search results, topic or location pages or pulled from the database at random to be included on personalised home pages.

We do ask however that you only select the channels, location or topics that are relevant to your Listing, as irrelevant listings are inconvenient for site visitors and will have a negative effect on your Listing.  Below is a quick guide to categorising your Listing.

  • Channels – you can select either or all of Visit Angus, Business Angus or Live Angus as relevant to your Listing.
    • Visit Angus should be selected for Listings relevant for tourism or leisure.
    • Business Angus should be selected for Listings which are primarily Business-to-Business.
    • Live Angus should be selected for Listings relevant for Angus residents and communities.
  • Topics – you can select several topics or none at all if none are relevant. You can mix between Visit, Business or Live topics and these don’t have to correspond to the channels you have chosen
  • Location – Only one location should be selected although for relevant Listings “the Glens” can be selected as a second category. All Listings have by default an “Angus” location.

Categorise Your Listing: Sub-Category

You must choose a sub-category for your Listing. You can choose several sub-categories by holding the Control key on your keyboard at the same time as clicking the sub-category with your mouse.

If none of the sub-categories appear relevant to your Listing simply select the “Other…” sub-category which appears in every sub-category list.

Descriptions

The descriptions section of the Listings entry form allows you to add:

  • Keywords to describe your Listing – this will help to make your page more visible to external search engines
  • A short description – this is the summary description which is rendered on search results
  • A long description- this is a free text section which can be up to 500 words, although we recommend that you aim for about 250 words.  The long description is the body of the actual Listings page.  It can be used for any information you like, but can be particularly useful to add information that you have not had the opportunity to detail elsewhere. For instance for restaurants this could be a sample menu, or for hotels the number of bedrooms or en-suite rooms.

Facilities & Additional Information

This section gathers additional information about the Listing such as prices, facilities and accessibility information, and for events, dates and times.

Both the Businesses and Organisations and Initiatives and Associations categories do not have this section.  The section is relevant for events, attractions, accommodation and entertainment venues. The fields in this section will vary dependent on the category of Listing and most are checkboxes which can be completed quickly.

4. Listings already on angusahead.com

Where do the existing Listings come from?

There are several thousand pages in the Listings already and you may find that your organisation, business, facility, service, event or project is already listed.

The initial information for the Listings has been taken from an existing Angus Council source or publication such as the Angus Business Directory and if your organisation completed the annual Tayside Business Survey your business should be listed already.  Other listings may be derived from a third party source where the information has been licensed or an Angus Ahead partner.

I am already listed on angusahead.com, so why should I use the Add & Edit Listings service?

The Listings pages which were created initially by angusahead.com will contain only basic contact and description information. Add & Edit Listings gives you the option to correct and update details and supplement this basic information by adding a range of details to help promote your business or service.

In addition if you are a tourism, leisure or retail business you can add listings under the specific categories relevant to your business. This means you can present more detailed information for your type of business and be more easily found by visitors to angusahead.com, who are specifically searching for your type of business.

My business/service/event is already listed – how do I get to edit it?

If you would like to "adopt" a listings page on angusahead.com for editing please contact us at listings@angusahead.com, tel: 01307 473750.

5. Supplying Images and Photographs for Your Listing

You have the option to supply up to three photographs plus other images for your listing page by emailing them to angusahead.com.  You do not need to supply any images for your Listings and many Listings will not have images.  However images can help to enhance your page and make it more interesting to site visitors.

What images can be put on my Listing?

You can supply up to three photographs and other images for your Listing.  Other images could include

  • Your logo or brand
  • Any accreditations, memberships etc your organisation holds

Where do I send them to?

You must email any images as file attachments to images@angusahead.com. You must give each image a name which helps to identify the Listing it is associated with and if possible describes the content of the image e.g. Angus Ahead Hotel - Reception area, Angus Ahead Festival etc.

The angusahead.com team will upload the images to your Listing page. Dependent on demand this may take some time, particularly as the site is populated at first, and we would ask you to bear with us.

What Format do the images need to be in?

  • Photographic images need to be in jpeg format (.jpg)
  • All other images should be in either jpeg or gif format - if you have a "Save for the Web" option in your graphics package use this.
  • Images should be around 10 KB and must not exceed 15 KB.

If you are having difficulties in formatting your images correctly, you can send them in their current format to angusahead.com and we will do our best to assist, although we cannot guarantee that all requests will be serviced.

6. Keeping Listings up to date and deleting Listings

Content that is out of date is disliked by web visitors and can be very inconvenient. We ask all those using the Add & Edit Listings service to keep their Listings up to date. You can do this at any time by logging in and editing your details.

Listings Review and Expiry Dates

All Listings have a review and expiry date which is set to a maximum of 1 year from the date the Listing was added or last edited. When you add or edit your Listing you will be prompted for a review and expiry date in the entry form. This can be any time within 1 year of the current date. If you are entering an event you should set the expiry date to the last date of the event.

Listings which are not updated or edited within the 1 year period will expire and will be automatically removed from angusahead.com by the system. If no details have changed you can "renew" your Listing by opening it for editing and resubmitting it as it is.

Remember, if you wish to stay listed you must update your Listings at least once a year.

What if I wish to delete a Listing?

If you wish to delete a Listing or no longer be listed on angusahead.com, please email us at listings@angusahead.com to tell us so. Please specify your username and the name of the Listing(s) you would like removed.

7. Listings Terms & Conditions

All participating organisations must agree to the Listings Terms & Conditions before they can register and Add & Edit Listings.
